In Germany it is a tradition to watch Dinner for One on New Years Eve. I just can’t imagine why but everyone is doing it. Besides me – I am using the time before midnight to get wasted :)

I know here in the south there is this tradition, Which I never take part in. I really don’t like them that much. Maybe this year I will have a go at them…..
Many parts of the south celebrate the new year by consuming black-eyed peas. These legumes are typically accompanied by either hog jowls or ham. Black-eyed peas and other legumes have been considered good luck in many cultures. The hog, and thus its meat, is considered lucky because it symbolizes prosperity.

I have seen it a couple of times in Germany. What gets me is they laugh at it every time.

I remember reading an article about this tradition a few years ago, although iirc it was in regard to one of the Scandinavian countries. Perhaps it’s a Northern European thing. =)

    Happy new year and Skøl!

It is a tradition in Norway too. I hadn’t seen it for years until Youtube. I loved the version there that was given in low German. Op Platt. Skaal…
