I read that in Nepal they use cordyceps as a traditional viagra. Dem' spores must want in the human body real bad if they are giving us that good of a reason to digest em. Nature will always find a way to humble the mighty. When it's our turn who knows what it may throw at us? If it is brain-hijacking half-life parasites so be it. Then again, that last sentence could also describe reality TV...
Maybe we can speed things up a little by genetically engineering ol' cordyceps as an invincible biological weapon or something? Who's in?!?

Geedee, I live for the day when some herbal enthusiast takes your advice and becomes the first human to host a mutated strain of cordyceps.

cordyceps can be purchased in a bottle - if you get the right kind (using hot water extraction) they're a very powerful medicinal variety - helps with colds, the immune system, the heart, lung function, longevity, and stamina. the stuff grows out of caterpillars.

oops, forget all that,

It is Episode 8 - I only have up to episode 5.

Episode 8: Jungles

Jungles cover roughly three per cent of our planet yet contain 50 per cent of the world's species. High-definition cameras enable unprecedented views of animals living on the dark jungle floor.

In the Ngogo forest the largest chimpanzee group in the world defends its territory from neighbouring groups. Other jungle specialists include parasitic fungi which infiltrate an insect host, feed on it, and then burst out of its body.

It's weird, I own the "Planet Earth" DVDs and I don't recall this being on them.

I'm also somewhat sure it's not on the bug-specific "life in the undergrowth".

Perhaps "Life on Earth"? (What made me notice is that the aspect ration is wrong for "Planet Earth" which are 16:9), so it has to be either "trials of life", "life on earth", "living planet" or "the private life of plants" ... (have I forgotten any?)

That was why I asked, but I'll see if I can find this segment when I get home.

Have you heard of Lancet Flukes?

Similar tasting parasite... Lancet Fluke young take over the minds of ants and force them to climb to the tops of blades of grass where they are consumed by unwitting ungulates, usually cows, who then become the hosts to the flukes which go on to complete their life cycle...

Makes me wonder about us. I know plenty of mindless zombies who I wouldn’t be surprised to find out are under the control of a parasitic fungi.

This is Sir David Attenborough, he has narrated numerous nature specials (see here http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/programmes/who/david_attenborough.shtml) this may be part of his Life On Earth series. I completely love his style and voice, it's so much better than today's Animals Gone Wild and When Animals Attack style of shows.

Hi Molovoo

this clip was taken from the British series Planet Earth. It was a BBC production, narrated (like most BBC nature programmes) by David Attenborough (brother of film producer Richard Attenborough.)
I'm sure the DVD(s) is/are available from the BBC's own website or any good store.
