Sounds dangerous to me.
From the auction:
Up For Auction is a Very Rare 1950s Hop Rod gas powered pogo stick. Excellent Condition, this was removed from my grand pa’s Garage , I thought he had threw this thing away years ago as when i was about 9 -10 years old i remember playing on this cool pogo stick as it threw me for a loop about 30" in the air and scrapped my elbow when coming down to earth.
Grandpa never let me play on it again as my grandpa must of hid it from me as now i found it 37 years later in the raffters all wrapped up as you see it is very clean and complete as to the last pic is from doing some research and had found a pic of one new in box so it shows it’s all there .
I have gone over this HopRod and it has no problems with no cracks or breaks on the finned areas and the cylinder that holds the battery’s is in great condition with no acid residue or junk in the top tube ( below handle) all contacts and grounds are in perfect condition and the fuel that it runs on is your normal cox airplane fuel, and it does have great compression as when i push down on spring you can hear and feel the piston , as i have gone over this pogo stick it appears that it will work as the day i played on it all you need is aprx 6-C batteries and some fuel, This link http://www.bpmlegal.com/wpogo.html will give you some idea how rare this item is and how not to use this item without adult supervision Please read.

Yea Hi! Able to jump over a garbage can with the HOP ROD. Gas cylinder w/sparkplug right? Fun, yup.. I tried it back then. It blasts your feet like a sledge hammer, then you try and recover and if you time it just right you can keep going, I remember that. It’s not that easy at first. If your feet arn’t on or slip, it could be launching very dangeriously away, ha-ha. My buddy still has his too. Someone (a daredevil) will enjoy it. cool yes.

I remember seeing a feature on either this or a souped-up one (the engine was a lot bigger) in Playboy Magazine, probably in the early 1960’s. Of course, being Playboy, there was a good-looking unclothed girl stepping on to it. There was one good photo showing her shooting into the air–hair flying–what an expression on her face, if you were noticing it!

Well I bought one for my husband in the 70’s and it was stolen after he passed away in 2003 and if I could get my hands on the sob that took it HE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO RIDE IT! Any one comes across one for sale in the Southern Indiana, Louisville Kentucky area write me-I will see to it you get a reward. I have a pretty good idea of the lowlife who took it along with thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of racing equipment, tools, parts and antiques. To steal from me is one thing but to steal from my dead husband is another. Very long but interesing story. There was also a ’60’s era Harley dragbike stolen. Ahhh-he picked me like a chicken while he was trying to buy the property my husband left me and allowed others in to help themselves. No personal relationship involved, I just had to do things “legally” while he didn’t.
