I truly love the opensource community. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside to see such incredible software coming out for free. Worldwind, a software developed by NASA and various opensource community members, is an incredible teaching and learning tool, displaying incredibly beautiful 3D representations of not only Earth, but the Moon (our moon), Jupiter (and moon), Saturn, Mars, and more.

The UI in Worldwind is really charming. The top bar is like the dock in OSX, gliding across it slightly enlarges each icon and displays their names. How often do you get such a pretty UI in a free piece of software? (But thats not all folks, there’s more – its at the low low price of Free to use anywhere you like!)

Remember, if you want to drive from Virginia to Alaska, use the appropriate software – Google maps or Google Earth are great. This isn’t a competition with GE – this software was created for a completely different intention – to educate.

Furthermore, GE doesn’t yet map Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, or Earth’s moon yet (and probably won’t) – so if you’re interested in those, this is probably the coolest thing you can download to give you the feeling that you’re nearly there.

Check it out – Worldwind Central or Worldwind (NASA)
