Many blogs claim to have an unusual angle on things. They claim to see the world at an unusual slant. Fine. But this is nothing new. Over at Thought 4 the Day we’re great fans of The Enlarged Devil’s Dictionary. Here are a few example definitions:
Love, n. A temporary insanity curable by marriage.
Grave, n. A place in which the dead are laid to await the coming of the medical student.
Fraud, n. The life of commerce, the soul of religion, the bait of courtship and the basis of political power.
Friendship, n. A ship big enough to carry two in fair weather, but only one in foul.
Politics, n. pl. A means of livelihood affected by the more degraded portion of the criminal classes.
Take, v. t. To acquire, frequently by force but preferably by stealth.
Bang, v. t. That arrangment of a woman’s hair that suggests shooting her; hence the name.
And those were written by Ambrose Bierce between 1881 and 1887.
The strange thing is, when I read them, I can’t help thinking of Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier.
If you enjoy this sort of thing, then do pop over to Thought 4 the Day. I don’t double pot so you won’t be disappointed. And you might enjoy our new series You’ll Never Get Out of it Alive (sure signs you take life way too seriously).
S ee you soon.
