Scientology and Me – Tonight 8:30 BBC1
I was watching the news this morning before work and they showed the BBCs version of this, footage of BBC’s John Sweeney ‘losing it’ at a Scientology spokesperson. The video was filmed using Scientology cameras and put online to discredit John before the documentary comes out (The BBC’s clip, which was shown this morning, shows the argument to be much less onesided). This is how Scientology deals with a lot of its critics:
While making our BBC Panorama film “Scientology and Me” I have been shouted at, spied on, had my hotel invaded at midnight, denounced as a “bigot” by star Scientologists, brain-washed – that is how it felt to me – in a mock up of a Nazi-style torture chamber and chased round the streets of Los Angeles by sinister strangers.
Back in Britain strangers have called on my neighbours, my mother-in-law’s house and someone spied on my wedding and fled the moment he was challenged.
The Operation Clambake website (which was delisted from google after legal threats from the Scientologists), lists many more occurences like this as well as more documentaries, clips, interviews, including one, my personal favourite, of a Scientologist picketting a critics house and handing out leaflets to all his neighbours saying he’s a pervert.
Anyway, I digress. Watch the show tonight, and check out Operation Clambake for more information on the Cult of Scientology. It also has links to the brilliant South Park episode, which deals with Scientology and explains Scientologists view of the origin of things (spoiler: There are Aliens, DC10s and Atomic Bombs – What a story!).

Oh here we go, are you really ready for the onslaught of scientology scum that is going to infiltrate your website now, JH? The BBC’s efforts are commendable and they are worth the prime-time slot. The public should be made aware of the filth, greed and strategic-destructive apparatus of this heinous corporation hiding under the cloak of a “religion.”

I guess I am ready .. lol … I am scared as hell that the spokesman shows up on my door with his camera team. I am just going to refer them to Canadian Chris.
Just a note of RGS on religion … I’d could do totally without it and I think the world all together would be a better place. Believing is good but how many times did religion take advantage of people believing…? All the wars …? People dieing for religion? Money .. Greed? I mean HELLO! This is 2007!

I had a look at the new ‘magazine’ which you linked to (sort of… the link doesn’t work) and quiet frankly its laughable. Comparing people saying that you’re a member of a cult (which you are) with racists using the ‘n’ word. Scientology is not a race! Nor is it a religion! And so far, at least the government of the UK has seen sense enough not to give it the same status that it enjoys in the US.
I actually thought the video of Sweeney shouting at the spokesman was terrible and a very unprofessional thing to have done. After seeing the rest of his documentary, I’m quite surprised that he didn’t do more. He was met every step of the way by resistence. Even cancelling all the interviews with Scientology’s ‘celebrities’ just because he mentioned the word cult? Why is it that Scientology can’t take any criticism. And the spying on him constantly! It would be shameful for anyone to act that way, let alone a group of people who are trying to get to be a religion.
Please feel free to provide me with more reading material. I’m always happy to hear the other side of the story!

You owe it to yourself to check out the other side of this story. BBC’s actions in filming this documentary were outrageous, and I for one am glad Sweeney had his comeuppance. He made himself and his show a laughing stock. Maybe people will even have the integrity to check Scientology out as a result.
