RING

“RING” is a special alarm clock designed for couples and deaf-mutes. Different from the common products, this “RING” wakes up people via the vibration other than noise. It consists of a base and two ring-type devices which can be worn onto the finger pad which is the most sensitive part of the finger. The base can be use to set the timer and charge the “RING”. This innovative alarm clock is composed by a micro vibration device and a micro-chip.

RING

This “RING” design by Meng Fandi is the Top 20 all over the world in 2007 Braun Prize from 54 countries. Best of Best.

Head over to see more details of this “RING” concept here ;)

If this thing goes on the market, i’ll surely buy it ;)

I wanted to comment on your use of the term “deaf-mute.” I would like you to know that it is not a politically correct term, nor a common term either. It is also very, very, verrrrrry *antiquated.* It is based on the old-fashioned myth that Deaf people cannot speak at all, hence the term, “mute.” As a Deaf person, I can speak, although not perfectly like others sometimes can. There are also Deaf people who do not have any ability to speak. Skills at speaking vary greatly among the Deaf population. If you want to get technical, ability to speak has nothing to do with being able to use an alarm clock! :)

Anyway, in general, “hearing-impaired” is a term that is considered politically correct among hearing people. Although that is not a popular term among Deaf people, especially those that use sign language like myself, we prefer to be called simply, “Deaf.” So it would be advisable to use “deaf” from then on!

In regards to the alarm clock that you have posted, that seems very cool! I am a rather heavy sleeper though, so I don’t know how well it would work for me. I have an alarm clock that has a vibrating pad thing (looks like a gigantic black M&M), that is put underneath the pillow or mattress. Even though the pad vibrates very powerfully, I still sometimes don’t wake up until after it has been going off for 5 minutes!

Oh, and one more thing, if a Deaf person cannot speak, that does not mean that they are “mute.”
