There's no need for a special gadget to make your own french fries. I do'em like this:

- cut up potatoes as either fries or segments, or whatever you want
- heat your oven to 200-230 celsius
- take a bowl with a lid
- add some olive oil (just a few spoons) or whatever oil you prefer
- add spices (basil, peppers, whatever - feel free to experiment)
- throw in the potatoes (if you're doing a huge load, do this in several iterations)
- close lid, shake well
- pour potatoes into an even, thin level and put into oven
- take out of oven when they have some color on them (maybe stir them a bit in between), something like 40 minutes

Definitely much better than anything stir-fried you get at fast-food places. But then again, it's not fast food. Still, very easy to do, especially if you have an efficient tool to cut up the potatoes.
