An Indiana landlord said he wanted people to see the pain of his property tax bill when he hauled US$12,656.07 in coins and dollar bills to the county treasurer’s office.

Cary Malchow said the load left him “out of breath” but it was worth watching three cashiers working overtime to count every last cent of the semi-annual payment for his home, business and rental properties.

It took 75 minutes to count out the cash, said Delaware County Treasurer Warren Beebe.

I remember years ago a guy tried that locally as a protest against our new (at the time) one dollar coin, he tried to pay his property taxes all in loonies ($1 coins), he filled a wheel barrow up with them, went to city hall, and was told there is actually a law saying you can not pay amounts over $100 in coins… it was a nice try though, and it did get him in the news.
