You probably already understand that $2.38 per cartridge razor at Sam's is more than $0.40 per DE razor (I usually pay ~ $0.30, Michael), but the thing that most people don't understand is that the glycerin shave soap/cream and the brush are what really make the difference. And I'm no longer talking cost - even though at under $5.00 for a soap that lasts at least twice as long as the canned Gillette cream/gel it's a sure bargain. The brush raises the hairs, lightly exfoliates, and generally makes your face a superior surface for shaving. And the quality cream or soap lubricates your face so much better than the canned stuff that combined a good brush and soap drastically reduces razor burn and bumps. Regardless of which or what kind of razor you use, you can get more value out of the one you have through quality prep. I go for the max value, like Michael, and use a double edge safety razor, and my total cost is about $0.25 per day for razors and cream (shaving every day, which I often don't). Yes I paid $80 for a good brush and razor (30 brush /50 razor - you can spend upward of $500 here if you tried, or less than $30) - but those items will last years, if not longer. Even if I get antsy and upgrade each year, we're still talking about $0.50 per day total, shaving every day. And I can think of no good reason why your handy technique to make razors last wouldn't also work just fine on a platinum DE blade - meaning you could still cut your lifetime shaving related expenses by 80% - and have the best daily shave a man can have without visiting a barber. ;-) @Nick – you are definitely on the right track, but Michael has the best solution. As the water dries, it can cause miniature rust spots. If you thoroughly dry your blades after each use, they’ll last much longer. Isopropyl alcohol displaces the water easily. I use a Gillette Power Fusion and clean the blade with alcohol to clean off all the water and cream after each use. I’ve done this since Dec 2 and have yet to have to change the blade - no nicks or burns. The vibration of the razor under the alcohol makes sure that all water has been removed. I usually change the blade out every week so I figured I saved myself 6 blades. I buy the 16pk blades from Sam’s Club for approx $38. The blade lasts me usually for a week (you get two sides to it), I get a better shave, and heck, the $35 shaving cream (that is way way way better than the drugstore crap) lasts me a year as well. You can be a well groomed ape for less than $1/day. Actually just switch to a single blade safety razor, the Razor is (depending on where you buy it) $35 and the blades go for $6 – $10 for a 10 pack. I've read that if you dry your blades after using them, they will stay sharper for much longer, but I'm not sure about actually sharpening the blade. Interesting idea though.
