Just for the fun of it – looks good and distracts from work. Who needs a search engine when you have a Stirling desktop engine
!
This desktop Stirling engine is powered by the expansion andcompression of air when heated and cooled, and uses the same simple yetelegant dynamics as the stirling engines from the IndustrialRevolution.
Invented in 1816 by the Reverend Dr. Stirling to create asafer, more efficient alternative to steam engine boilers, the Stirlingengine is still taught in mechanical engineering courses at leadinguniversities to demonstrate the high efficiency, quiet operation, andheat utilization of closed cycle regenerative heat engines. Handmade inGermany, the unit has a solid brass body and a glass cylinder andpiston that are precisley designed to minimize friction, eliminatingthe need for lubrication.
The alcohol burner heats the glass tube, causing the air inside to expand and push the horizontal piston towardsthe chamber. This movement displaces some of the warm air into themetal chamber where it continues to expand, forcing the vertical pistonupward. The pistons are connected to the flywheel with a system oflevers and pulleys, causing the flywheel to spin up to 5,000 RPM andenabling the sequence to repeat until the flame is put out.
