2 nights ago I was watching a documentary (did I mention that I love documentaries?) about Gustavo Dudamel and his Venezuelan Youth Orchestra visiting Salzburg on Arte. When I saw Gustavo dirigent for the first time I couldn’t hold back a lol. His hair is hideous. But after I was watching a while I was very much moved. Great stuff:
This is the captivating story of the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra System, an incredible network of hundreds of orchestras formed within most of Venezuela’s towns and villages. Once a modest program designed to expose rural children to the wonders of music, the system has become one of the most important and beautiful social phenomena in modern history. Over the past 30 years, more than one million young people have been introduced to classical music by this life-changing program. Recently the program has gained notoriety by producing world-class musicians including the youngest member of the Berlin Philharmonic, bassist Edicson Ruiz and world-renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel. Featuring interviews with many of the world’s most celebrated musicians including the great tenor Placido Domingo, Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Guiseppe Sinopoli, and Eduardo Mata, "Tocar y luchar" is an inspirational story of courage, determination, ambition and love, which shows us that only those who dare to dream can achieve the impossible.
