During my school time I loved playing with magnets during physics – I remember doing experiments with iron dust like above. Now it comes in nice tube and without the mess.
The Magnet Tube is a sealed plastic tube filled with iron filings. There’s a tunnel through the tube, however, that the Alnico magnet (the same type in microphones, speakers, and etc.) fits in. Give the tube a shake and the iron filings collect and connect, showing the arcs of the magnetic fields.
This is a great little science fair-y experiment and also an awesome desk toy. ’Cause you can slide the magnetic back and forth and make the iron filings dance.
