Sony Vegas Pro 9 Black Screen Problem

Quicktime glitch! So I have updated to the new Quicktime to 7.6.6 yesterday and it messes up my .mov movie files I filmed with my baby. I use Vegas Pro 9 to edit my stuff but ever since I updated Quicktime I get a black screen in my editor. Which is extremely frustrating.

So, my guess is – it’s caused by a codec problem and that I have to wait for a new Quicktime update.

Or … am I wrong, what can I do to fix this issue – sick of wasting time on that issue.

Or … what other video editor handling .mov files do you recommend?

I’ve had the same problem, and have found that playing around with the video track properties helps. Press the button highlighted in this picture, and play with the drop-down lists:

Thank you for the comment – tried almost everything but still no luck. Do you remember what you did exactly.

Und property I even applied an example video file so the correct number would be taken over for the project.

#4 Skrik :

I played around with the marked boxes in the following picture. Change one at a time, and click on OK, to see if that does it. If none of the choices in one box help, put it back the way it was before you start fiddling, and go to the next box. I can’t be more specific, because it all depends on the filetype you’re using, the encoding of that filetype, the camera you’re using, and so on. Plus I can’t remember exactly what I did. Hope you get it sorted out.

Skrik thanks for the help. I had the same problem but only certain .mov files from the SAME VIDEO CAMERA were coming in as black screens while OTHERS WORKED.

I clicked on the box skrik noted. ALL BROKEN VIDEOS DEFAULTED TO 8-bit under pixel format. I changed these to 32-bit floating point (video levels).

This solved the problem. Hope this helps if quicktime downgrades don’t work for you.

Going to try downgrading. Just downloaded the latest of QuickTime! Wierd, once i import the video files into Vegas Pro 9.0e, the preview works until i reach around 3 min of footage, than it goes blank with the actual footage showing either Full Green or Red image. Don’t know what to do. Just got my Canon t2i/550D and this really bumped me! :(

When I Import it into Vegas it came up with Video, and no Audio. NOW when I import it (after downloading V 7.5.6) It has Video but No AUDIO! I used a popular video converter to turn the original into a MP3 file /WMA file/ WAV file but I have to line up the 2 video and audio in Vegas, and in some part the audio slows down or malforms a bit and it just doesn’t fit. Please Help!

#42 Drew :

I’m actually using Vegas Pro 10 now with my WMV files. Odd thing is that it worked fine in Vegas Pro 9 (i was using a trial), but when i open the same project in my recently purchased v10, i get a couple of videos that come up, not completely black, but almost. I can see shades of color every once in a while and see some figures faintly. I played with all the selections mentioned above to no avail. I also tried loading the problem videos into their own project, same problem. They don’t have this problem when just played through the OS (i.e. Windows Media Player). Then i realized the clips with the problems are windows media 9 ADVANCED profile, while the others were just windows media 9. So i broke out Expression Encoder and encoded to VC-1 Simple, and VC-1 Advanced, both of which worked just fine.

But now the preview window shows an annoyingly pixeleted video (MP4). The window settings are fine (automatic preview), so what is this about now?

Been facing the same problem with my Canon 7D videos.

I have just seen a tip on another forum that renaming your video file from .mov to .mp4 will work. This way Vegas’ codec kicks-in instead of QT to open the video.
Wanna give this a try today.

Click the icon that looks like a circle with a line through it.

On your video track — the one that is “darkened” — there is a track “header” to the left. It’s the area with all the buttons, a slider, and a large square with “1.” on it.

One of those buttons (the only one that you currently have pressed) has a circle with a line through it. This is the Mute button for that track. It turns that track on and off.

Click that button to UN-mute the track.
