We’ve been back in the USA for about three weeks now, and I’m already starting to freak out about the foods which are sold here. Maybe I shouldn’t have watched Food Inc. — a terrifying documentary about the American food industry. It’s amazing what gets put into our food, without our ever knowing about it.

Since that movie, I’ve been reading labels very carefully. This morning, I sat down at the computer with my loaf of 100% Whole Wheat Bread (No High Fructose Corn Syrup! Made With Whole Grains!) and opened up Wikipedia.

First of all, don’t get me started on the fact that they brag about the lack of High Fructose Corn Syrup. It’s BREAD! What the hell should it need with corn syrup, anyway?! Regardless, it turns out that this bread isn’t quite farm-fresh and wholesome, after all. One of the seventeen ingredients is an additive called azodicarbonamide. Check out what Wikipedia has to say about this chemical, which not even my spell-check recognizes:

Use of azodicarbonamide as a food additive is banned in Australia and in Europe. In Singapore, the use of azodicarbonamide can result in up to 15 years imprisonment and a fine of $450,000.

Gulp. But why?! “In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive has identified azodicarbonamide as a respiratory sensitiser (a possible cause of asthma)”

Awesome. So why doesn’t America join the rest of the developed world, and ban it? What the hell does azodicarbonamide even do, besides promote asthma? Besides being used in the production of foamed plastics, it helps bleach flour. And after all, what’s the ability to breath compared to slightly whiter bread?

Look: I love being in the States, with the friendly people, the way of life, the financial freedoms, the trashy TV, etc etc. But man! Americans really, really need to wake up and take a good look at what they’re putting into their bodies. And demand that the FDA starts regulating food to protect its citizens rather than corporate profits.

A review:

I bought a bunch of snack taxi bags (they’re great too – check them out!) for my daughters lunches. They’re re-usable bags with cute designs on the outside and almost like tent material on the inside. I give them a quick hand-wash in the sink and hang them to dry on this great little dryer – it works out perfect! I used to go through the snack and sandwich sized baggies like mad, but between these two products I’ve definitely cut down on our plastic consumption and waste. An additional bonus is that because it’s so easy, it’s helped to motivate me to integrate more "green" practices into our home life and reduce our consumption and waste (yay!) When you’re not using the dryer the wooden ring lifts up, bringing the wooden dowels together to make a narrow, compact unit you can easily stuff in a drawer or corner. I love it!
