We left the US 9 years ago – started our movie recommendation site Criticker shortly after but never got the chance to try Netflix – Now we are living for our travel blog in Savannah and we finally got to play with Netflix. We were shocked to find out how bad their recommendations are. Did you notice that basically every film has 3 stars? And their questionnaire (You’ll Heart These Films) It’s em .. well it leaves me speechless. Especially when you think about that they spent a million bucks on improving their recommendation engine.

For obvious reasons we use Criticker to decide what we rent next – it’s easy, fast, free and it’s targeted to your taste and is almost never wrong.

Rank at least 10 films – after that Criticker will be able to generate your TCI (matching you with other users with similar taste in movies – more info) Then, sign up for a free account (so you don’t loose your ranked films) and then rank some more films if you wish here. The more films you rank the better we can predict movies for you. A lot of people are put off by the up to 100 ranking scale but our movie recommendation engine can handle 1 – 10, jumps by ten or any other system you would like to apply (think about it first how you want to rank the films).

Do you want to be more specific? Check out the Criticker Film Database – So let’s say you are feeling like watching a popular comedy from the years 1980-1990  sorted by your PSI (probably score index – the score we thing you would give) – just apply these filters there and hit GO. Voilà – then we will list all the films according of your filters and your taste. Copy and past the title to Flixster and add it to your queue.

You will find tons of interesting movies you would not consider in the first place – but after watching you will be so happy you gave Criticker a shot.

Well, we run Criticker:

We’ve always been a two-man team, without any funding or venture capital money, and completely unaffiliated with any other site. And couple of our users suggested to take part in the Netflix Prize. We looked into it and read their T&C and decided to sooo not take part. Since everything you submit to Netflix Prize goes over in their possession.

So 1 Millions sounds good but at the end Netflix paid $1 an hour in development and probably gained resources not related to make their recommendations better.

The New York Times has an interesting article – stating that a almost Netflix Prize winner has regrets.

We are very happy that we stood away from it and that we got to keep our simple but very effective movie recommendation algorithm.

Not too long ago we released a new feature on our Movie Recommendation Site: Criticker which allows 2 people to receive movie recommendations both like. Perfect for set of 2 people not being able to decide what movie to watch.

In order to use this feature you have to sign up an account ( each person one account) with Criticker and start ranking a bunch of movies (the more the better). Then find your friends profile page and add him as a Kumple (buddy). Then you will be able to generate recommendations within your Kumpel Page. Just pick your friend from the drop down menu within the Joint Recommendation box and voilà … no more fights about what movie to watch.

Sounds more complicated than it actually is.
