Bill Elkins demonstrates the mobility of the EX-1A, which he developed at AiResearch in the late 1960s. It was the first suit to use his patented toroidal joints, and was the most mobile suit that had been created at that time. (Most of the motions in this video would not have been possible in the Apollo suit.) The EX-1A (which on the moon would have been covered with a cloth material) is pressurized 35 percent higher than the Apollo suits.

Those suits required considerable effort to move, and had pneumatic spring forces that rebounded to the neutral position. By contrast, the EX-1A joints were very low-torque and came much closer to mimicking the full mobility of the human body.

When retro catches up with current technology.

Anyone who grew up in the 80s will tell you how cool the Duck Hunter video game was (especially when you got to use that garishly orange computer gun). Well now you can relive the fun in the noughties with Duck Hunter, the indoor flying duck hunt game. The game consists of an autonomous flying duck, complete with flapping wings (the technical term ornithopter) and an infra-red gun, complete with bullet sound effects – you can even cock it like a real hunting gun.

The duck flies randomly around the room (how randomly depends on whether you’ve set it up for a straight or circular flight pattern) for up to 40 seconds or until you’ve shot it 3 times. It doesn’t need mains power, so as long as you’ve got fresh batteries the Duck Hunter is good to go in as little as ten seconds- just connect it to the charging dock on the gun for a quick burst and you’re ready to go hunting. It’s all the fun of hunting in the comfort of your own home.

Way back in 1985 what would you have been willing to give for a handheld NES? Your full collection of Garbage Pail Kids cards maybe?… or how about your old Atari 2600 and a sealed copy of ET? They interpret the heart of an old cathode-ray TV using a compact, energy efficient liquid-crystal display, giving us a retro device that would have been impossible to build in the time that inspired it.
