Last week we got back from 3 day jeep tour exploring some of the most diverse landscapes I have ever seen. All these pictures I took on the Uyuni Salt Flats and it’s surroundings. We were very worried at first, we read a lot of crazy horror stories of bad tour operators. We got lucky, everything went fine and the other people on our tour were all awesome. I could not pin down the best part of the tour but here are the things we got to see and below that some of the best pictures I took.

Bolivia is really growing on us – we went on a 3 day trekking trip and did a silver mining tour ( I will blog about them later) but the most incredible thing we have done so far is this really bizarre train ride from Sucre to Potosi (the highest city in the world which was also the most important city worldwide as well). The train … well this mixture of bus and train took almost 7 hours (by normal bus it’s only 2 1/2 hours) and even had an absolute useless steering wheel.

Welcome to Pittsburgh! After Atlanta I flew to Pittsburgh to meet Mike’s parents and greet Mike arriving to the USA flying in from Valencia. We staying a in neat motel and decided to explore Pittsburgh a little. WOW, I came with no expectations and Pittsburgh scored high. What a neat little city. First thing we did was taking a ride on the Duquesne Incline to get a feel and view of the city.

Wiki explains:

The Duquesne Incline is a inclined plane railroad, or funicular, located near Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood and scaling Mt. Washington. It was completed in 1877 and is 800 feet (240 m) long, 400 feet (120 m) in height, and is inclined at a 30 degree angle. It is an unusual 5 ft (1,524 mm) gauge.

Originally steam powered, the Duquesne Incline was built to carry cargo up and down Mt. Washington in the late 1800s. It later carried passengers, particularly Mt. Washington residents who were tired of walking up footpaths to the top. Inclines were then being built all over Mt. Washington. But as more roads were built on “Coal Hill” most of the other inclines were closed. In the 1940s, only the Monongahela Incline and the Duquesne Incline remained.

In 1962, the incline was closed, apparently for good. Major repairs were needed, and with so few patrons, the incline’s private owners did little. But local Duquesne Heights’ residents launched a fund-raiser to help the incline. It was a huge success, and on July 1, 1963 the incline reopened under the auspices of a non-profit organization dedicated to its preservation.

[source]

FUN!

Give your credit cards a ride of erasure.

The Magnet Levitation Activity Kit is chock full of great things (good for kids and science fairs, but also great for adults) which will help you explore magnetism. You’ll learn about magnet properties and strength. You’ll build a magnetic pendulum and observe oscillations. You’ll enjoy seemingly to defy gravity as you achieve magnetic equilibrium and balance magnets in weird ways. And all the while, you’ll be learning about the properties and wonders of magnets.

Oh, all the while, the Magnet Levitation Activity Kit will be ramping up your knowledge and experience with magnets so you can build the final project: a model maglev train. Yay.

While the train set is also a fun game for picking up the fake suchi (included!) as the train moves around the tracks, it’s also perfect for real meals as well. Set up your own kaiten sushi shop right at your dinner table.
